A nail file is an instrument designed to be used to file down the edges of fingernails and of toenails. The most often used type of nail file is the emery board nail file and the metal file. There are other types of nail files made from different materials but their purpose is still the same, to smooth nail edges or file them down to size desired. It is sometimes opinioned that nails should never be cut with scissors but should be shorn down using a nail file. The reason is that nails can be very brittle and can split or be damaged if treated harshly with scissors. Keeping this premise in mind, manufacturers have designed a glass nail file that is said to be even more gentle to the nail than those made from emery boards or from gravel treated hard plastics. A glass nail file is etched with to imitate the rough surface of an emery board. Using a glass nail file is said to be better at protecting the edges of nails since they are more gentle to the nail. The same principle applies to the crystal nail file. A crystal nail file is considered more durable than its glass counterpart since it is treated to be harder and wear longer. However, like all glass, these fingernail files will break if dropped. If handled carefully, they are said to last longer than the more typically known fingernail files, the emery files. Unlike the metal files that also have etchings to smooth out nails, glass files are said to be more hygienic since they are not susceptible to picking up fragments from nails or becoming embedded with dust as in the metal file. Choosing the right file for your nails is part of keeping your fingernails healthy for a longer period of time which is very important to the well groomed woman or male.
